Police Identify Driver In Parkway Tree Death

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Connecticut state police have identified the driver who was killed on the Merritt Parkway in Stamford when a tree fell on his car during a strong rainstorm.

Troopers say 74-year-old Norman Gamache of Westport, Mass., died Thursday afternoon when the tree fell onto the southbound side of the parkway between exits 34 and 35 shortly before 1:30 p.m. The southbound lanes were closed for about four hours during the cleanup.

One of two passengers in Gamache’s car was injured. Authorities say 84-year-old Goldie Gitlin of North Dartmouth, Mass., was taken to a hospital for a broken sternum and minor cuts.

Other people have been killed by falling trees on the parkway. State transportation officials say crews are on the Merritt every day pruning and removing trees and limbs.
