Arrigoni Bridge Work Begins This Month
Traffic in the Middletown-Portland area is likely to get a little crowded starting later this month, when crews start a year-and-a-half long project to replace the deck of the Arrigoni Bridge on Route 66and Route 17 across the Connecticut River.
33 thousand drivers cross the bridge each day, many during the morning and afternoon rush hour.
The bridge was built in 1938, and the repairs have been in the planning stages for years. Setup will start the evening of June 27, and on Tuesday morning, June 28, traffic on the bridge will be down to a single lane in each direction.
The DOT says it has taken steps to alert drivers that extra time will be needed, and will post travel times and speeds on its website. A wrecker will stand by, so there is no additional traffic delay waiting for a tow truck in the event of accidents.
Work is due to be completed until November, 2012 .
