Teen In Prom Controversy Wins Golf Title

SHELTON, Conn. (AP) _ Shelton High School student James Tate has added a golf title to his other big victory of the spring, the one that will allow him to attend his senior prom.

Tate shot the low round of 76 Tuesday to lead Shelton to the Southern Connecticut Conference golf championship at the Race Brook Country Club in Orange.

Tate made international headlines last month when he was banned from the Shelton prom by school officials after posting a message on the school building in cardboard letters asking friend Sonali Rodrigues to be his date.

On May 13, Shelton school officials relented after a barrage of criticism and talk-show jokes about their decision.

He and Rodrigues plan to attend the prom on Saturday.
