New figures from the Census Bureau show the median age of the United States increased almost two full years between the 2000 census and the 2010 census. The median age of the nation as a whole is now put at 37.2 years. The Northeast is the oldest region, with a median age two years higher than the national median.
Connecticut is one of the seven oldest states in the country, with half the state’s residents older than age 40.. and half younger. Four of the oldest seven states are in New England. The statisticians point out there’s been a note-worthy increase in the population of older men, possibly because of the narrowing gap in mortality between men and women older than sixty.
Maine is the oldest state, with a median age of 42.7, compared to Utah at 29.2 and Texas at 33.5.
