One Dead As Van Fire Closes Parkway

 One person is dead after a fire in a van which closed the Merritt Parkway between exits 44 and 46 overnight Wednesday. Fairfield firefighters say a nearby resident phoned in the fire in a 1997 Chrysler Town and Country minivan, and reported hearing several explosions.

Firefighters battling the blaze found the body of a man believed to be the driver of the van.


One person was injured when his vehicle hit another which had stopped for the fire. Firefighters say extinguishing the blaze was made more difficult because burning magnesium car parts, and the flames spread to nearby brush.


The name of the minivan driver has not been released. The parkway southbound was closed until about 10 a.m. Thursday.
