Senator’s Son To Deploy To Afghanistan

PLAINVILLE, Conn. (AP) _ The oldest son of U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal is preparing for his first deployment to Afghanistan with his Connecticut-based Marine regiment.     Lt. Matthew Blumenthal is among 176 reservists leaving later this year with their unit for Afghanistan after six months of training at Camp Pendleton in California.

He was among dozens honored Thursday at a sendoff party in Plainville for the soldiers, who are part of Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment.

The 25-year-old lieutenant is the oldest of Sen. Blumenthal’s four children, and accompanied his father at this year’s State of the Union address in Washington, D.C.

A message left at Sen. Blumenthal’s office in Washington, D.C., was not immediately returned Thursday.
