Former New Haven Man Killed In Kabul Airport Attack

A New Haven native is one of nine Americans killed Wednesday when an Afghan officer opened fire at the airport in Kabul.

The New Haven Register reports Raymond Estelle, Jr., who served 20 years in the Air Force, was among eight service members and one U.S, contractor killed in the attack.  The gunman also was killed.

Estelle, the married father of two, most recently lived in Virginia.  He was 41.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that he brother of the  Afghan officer says the gunman had financial problems,  but no ties to insurgents.  The shooting followed  an argument during a meeting at the Kabul airport.

Officials said it was the deadliest episode to date of an Afghan turning against his own coalition partners.

The shooting took place in an Afghan Air Corps meeting room at Kabul airport
