Sunday’s Victory Parade honoring the UConn Huskies for their NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship will go off as originally planned. Yesterday, organizers warned they had only half the money needed for both a rally and a parade, and contemplated scrubbing the parade and holding only a rally.
In the last 24 hours, the Hartford Business Improvement District and the Metro Hartford Alliance report receiving calls from companies and indivisuals offering financial support, and say now they have the additional $25,000 to stage the parade.
In all 19 corporations, businesses, organizations and individuals have promised financial support for the event.
The parade will start at 3, going from Trinity Street to Jewel to Gold Street to Main, south on Main Street to Capitol Avenue, then west on Capitol Avenue, back to the North Steps of the Capitol building for a rally at about 4:15. The team will travel the parade route atop a double-decker bus.
WTIC’s Joe D’Ambrosio, the voice of the Huskies, will serve as Master of Ceremonies, with comments from Governor Dannel Malloy, Trustees Chair Larry McHugh, UConn Coach Jim Calhoun and player Kemba Walker.
A full list of donors will be released Friday. As of Thursday, they include:
