“Oil Dealer” Scammed Companies, Customers

Federal authorities are looking for an identity thief who posed as a home heating oil broker around Connecticut, stealing oil from dealers and cash from customers.

The U-S attorney’s office says the suspect they identify as 37-year-old Marc Cannon presented himself to retail customers, offering a bargain rate for home heating oil. He would then call a legitimate heating oil company, arrange delivery, collect cash for the delivery from the customer and disappear

Only after the actual company billed the customer did the two sides realize they had been defrauded.

Prosecutors say Cannon, who went by the name “Marc the Oil Man” remains at large, and they released a photograph in hopes of finding him and taking him into custody. They say he worked in a series of companies in Connecticut and North Carolina, and is the subject of active state warrants in both states.
