Man Charged With Stealing Art For Scrap

Branford Police have arrested an East Haven man on charges that he stole a copper art sculpture from in front of a home in the area of North Main Street and intended to sell it for the scrap value of the metal.

Police say Michael Orifice, 42, was arrested after an alert neighbor called police when she awoke to the sound of a battery-operated saw early Wednesday.

Police say they found power tools, including saws, in Orifice’s vehicle. Officers found the statue nearby, complete with saw marks at its base, where it had been attached to a rock platform.

Orifice told investigators he is unemployed and intended to sell the sculpture for several hundred dollars, said police. When it was installed and constucted by a local artist, the sculpture cost approximately $4,400.

Orifice is charged with Criminal Trespass, Crimina Mischief, and Attempted Larceny. He was released on a written promise to appear in court on April 12.
