ENFIELD, Conn. (AP) _ Connecticut state police have charged a prison inmate with second-degree manslaughter in the beating death of a fellow prisoner earlier this month.

Troopers arrested 25-year-old Jose Gutierrez on Wednesday in connection with the death of Jason Scribner, who suffered multiple skull and rib fractures during a beating at the Willard-Cybulski Correctional Institution in Enfield on March 10. It’s not clear whether Gutierrez has a lawyer.

The 31-year-old Scribner, who was in prison for a police chase and violating probation in a DUI case, died four days after the beating at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Other inmates told officials that Scribner had a seizure.

Gutierrez is serving a three-year sentence for violating probation in a drug dealing case and larceny conspiracy.

State police say no other arrests are expected.
