Gov. Dannel P. Malloy chaired his first meeting of the State Bond Commission, which approved $81.5 million in borrowing on Thursday for the cars. They will be used on the Metro-North New Haven line, complementing the 342 others already ordered by the state.
Former Gov. M. Jodi Rell did not have enough votes on the commission in December to approve the additional money.
Malloy said Thursday he’s hopeful some of the new cars will start rolling before the end of March. There have been delays after problems developed during a testing phase, which has angered some commuters.
The state hopes all 380 cars will be running by the end of 2014.
