NEW YORK (AP) _ A North Carolina woman accused of snatching a newborn from a New York hospital more than two decades ago has been indicted on a kidnapping charge. The indictment against Ann Pettway was returned Thursday by a federal grand jury in Manhattan.
She’s been held without bail after her January arrest on charges that she kidnapped Carlina White from Harlem Hospital in August 1987. White is now 23. Pettway’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. Carlina White’s mother, Joy White, also did not immediately respond.
Arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 24.
The FBI has said in court papers that the Raleigh woman took the baby after struggling to conceive a child of her own.
