HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The U.S. Labor Department says it recovered nearly $1 million in back wages for 479 employees of UnitedHealthcare in Hartford after finding that employees were improperly denied overtime pay.
The federal agency said Monday it interviewed 90 employees and reviewed records for 21,000 employees. It says UnitedHealthcare incorrectly classified employees and denied overtime compensation for more than 40 hours worked in a week.
UnitedHealth Group says it does not fully agree with the Labor Department’s findings, but reclassified some jobs to make employees eligible for overtime pay.
The Labor Department said the company also failed to include certain compensation on which time and one-half should have been paid and that time records were not properly maintained.
It recovered $934,551 in overtime back wages and imposed $104,280 in civil penalties.
