Suspect Killed In Struggle With Wethersfield Policeman

An investigation is underway into the death of a man killed in a struggle with a Wethersfield policeman overnight.  State Police say the officer had responded to a report of a suspicious person in the driveway at the Soundbridge School on Progress Drive shortly before midnight.

Police say the man tried to flee on foot,   and when he was caught after a short pursuit, tried to grab the policeman’s gun.   As the struggle continued,  the weapon fell to the ground.  Police say the suspect’s arms were around the policeman’s neck as he retrieved the weapon,  and fired.

The suspect was pronounced dead at Hartford Hospital. The officer was treated for injuries he suffered during the struggle.  The identities of both are being withheld at this time.

Because it is an officer-involved shooting,  the State Police Major Crime Squad is conducting the investigation.
