East Hartford Man Charged With Attacking Whale Mascot

Hartford Police say a man who attacked the Whale mascot “Pucky” during Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Portland Pirates has been arrested.  Police say XL Center management has banned the suspect,   identified as 28-year-old Kevin O’Connell of East Hartford,  from attending future events there.

Police say O’Connell tackled and attacked the mascot while “Pucky” was greeting young fans in the stands near section 105.  They credit patrons with helping police and XL Center staff locate the suspect hiding in section 206.

Police say O’Connell was intoxicated at the time, and indicated to them he had tackled the mascot on a bet with a friend.  They say there was a serious risk that the employee in the costume or a fan could have been hurt.  He’s charged with breach of peace.
