Contractor Charged in North Canaan Gas Leak

A Massachusetts contractor is facing charges in connection with a propane gas leak Saturday morning at Specialty Mineral Company on Daisy Hill Road in North Canaan.Gas was leaking from a 30 thousand gallon propane tank connected to the building and forced the evacuation of a one mile radius, including a shopping center house a Stop and Shop and other businesses.

Once locating the leak the fire marshal found issues with the pipe installation and documentation indicating work on the pipe had been done by an unlicensed contractor.40 year old Michael Pluta of Barre, Massachusetts has been charged with reckless Endangerment in the First Degree,Violation of the Connecticut Propane Gas Piping Code and Failure to Hold a Contactors License for Gas Piping Installations.

Pluta was released on $5,000 dollars Non-surety bond and is due in Bantam Superior Court February 14.
