Controversal Play Will Go On In Waterbury

School Superintendent David Snead had called for a halt to Waterbury Arts Magnet School’s production of “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.” The award-winning play focuses on the African-American social condition in the early 20th century and makes use of the N-word.

The decision to allow the award-winning play to go on came after spirited debate from people on both sides of the issue.

Many cast members, most of whom are black, spoke in support of allowing the play to go on.

The board allowed the play to proceed with the condition that educational discussions be held before and after each of next month’s five performances.
