VERNON, Conn. (AP) _ The trial for a man accused of killing a University of Connecticut football player has been tentatively scheduled to start in late January.

Twenty-two-year-old John Lomax III of Bloomfield is charged with murder in Jasper Howard’s stabbing death during a dispute outside a dance on campus on Oct. 18, 2009.

Lomax has pleaded not guilty.

Lomax appeared Friday in Rockville Superior Court, where jury selection in his case is scheduled to start in late January. Prosecutors and Lomax’s attorney plan to meet again Dec. 17 to discuss the status of the case.
