NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) _ A New London police officer fired for using his cell phone to take pictures of a dead body and e-mailing them to four friends has won his job back.
The state Board of Mediation and Arbitration issued a decision this week that said while what Officer Jeffrey Nichols did showed poor judgment, it was not a fireable offense and he should be reinstated.
The Day reports that Nichols took the pictures when he responded to a drug overdose at a motel in June 2009.
Chief Margaret Ackley fired Nichols a month later for conduct unbecoming an officer and for divulging police information.
Nichols, with the backing of the police union, said in his appeal that he was fired without cause because the department does not have a clear policy on camera phone use.
