NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ New Haven’s future as a stop on both the men’s and women’s professional tennis circuits will become a bit clearer on Thursday.
A news conference has been scheduled at the Connecticut Tennis Center to discuss sponsorship of the tournament, which lost Pilot Pen as its title sponsor this year.
The tournament is one of just four sanctioned by both the men’s ATP Tour and the women’s WTA Tour.
The New Haven Register reported Wednesday that a deal has been brokered with Yale University and several area businesses to keep the tournament running through 2011, while the search for a new title sponsor continues.
Tennis officials have put the cost of a title sponsorship at about $2 million, somewhat less if the tournament reverts to a women’s-only event.
