PRESTON, Conn. (AP) _ The town of Preston is facing nearly $1 million in legal bills related to the failed effort to develop the former Norwich State Hospital property into a luxury resort.

As of Aug. 31, the town owed Shipman & Goodwin LLP of Hartford, $407,309. The firm still has to bill the town for another $564,851.

The Day of New London reports that the firm has agreed to wait for payment until the town begins selling portions of the nearly 400-acre property.

The town would then pay Shipman & Goodwin $5,750 for each acre it sells. The law firm has also agreed not to charge the town interest.

Finance board chairman Bob Maurice calls the amount “astonishing.”
