Wolf Pack Open Season with 4-2 Defeat of Checkers

There was an electric atmosphere at the XL Center as the Hartford WolfPack broke the ice on the hockey season with a 4-2 win over the  Charlotte Checkers,  the farm team of the former Hartford Whalers,  the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Checkers scored first , beating WolfPack goalie Chad Johnson for a first period goal, but with the veterans leading the way, the Wolfpack came back, Dale Weise drawing it even on the way a 3-1 lead after Charlotte pulled within a goal in the final five minutes, Captain Dane Byers put it away with an empty netter.

“Thrilled,” said Howard Baldwin of the 7,013 fans on hand , “three weeks ago we only had 500 tickets sold.”
