East Hampton Town Council Eliminates Police Chief Job

The  Town Council in East Hampton voted  5-1  Tuesday night to repeal the ordinance  requiring that the town have a police chief. The controversy began in June when Town Manager  Jeffrey O’Keefe  dismissed  Police Chief Matthew Reimondo in what he called a cost-saving  move.Reimondo claims he was  removed  for investigating  complaints of sexual harassment  lodged by three female town employees against the Town Manager.O’Keefe has since resigned.

A group of town residents has started a petition campaign hoping to get the police chief issue onto the ballot. They would need  some 12 hundred signatures  to force a referendum.
