Cleanup of "Tent City" Expected to Cost New Haven Thousands

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ A newspaper is reporting that the city of New Haven will likely pay thousands to clean up the remnants of a so-called “tent city” in West Haven.

The tent compound had been occupied by the homeless for several years. It was reportedly plagued by violence and drug use before West Haven police cleared it out last month. But hazardous material, human waste and burned vegetation were left behind.

The compound was in West Haven, but New Haven is responsible for cleanup costs because it’s part of New Haven’s West River Memorial Park.

The New Haven Register reported that the bids for the cleanup included a $17,000 bid. A New Haven spokeswoman said the city expects to finish the project next week, but that she didn’t yet have its cost.
